Considering the weight of its icy coat, this stem of Smooth Brome grass (
Bromus inermis) appears to be defying gravity. Actually, the ice built up slowly and evenly over eighteen hours, providing support for itself and the otherwise fragile grass. It also provides us with a beautiful reminder of an ice storm in southern Iowa. From 35mm negative.
