The Northern Lights are often seen as sheets of colored light in the northern sky. When the display takes place directly overhead, spectral images like this may be seen floating among the stars. On an early November night, a spectacular display was centered over southern Wisconsin. Caused by an unusually strong solar eruption, this haunting image shows the reds and greens produced as oxygen molecules, their electrons excited by solar particles to a higher state of energy, return to their original state of energy.
