Sandhill cranes (
Grus canadensis) sporting their fall plumage fly low overhead as they cross the Wisconsin River east of Baraboo. Their iron-stained summer feathers have molted, leaving them in their natural grey coloring. These birds have made a remarkable recovery, numbering over 20,000 in Wisconsin. Aldo Leopold noted that during his time on his “Sand County” farm (in Sauk County) there were fewer than 25 breeding pairs of cranes in Wisconsin.
