Lines and circles etched in ice. A few days earlier, this had been ordinary surface water on Crystal Lake in Dane County, Wisconsin. Then, on one night, the lake froze over. It froze rapidly, trapping bubbles in the water, turning them into solid spheres, the surface crystallizing into patterns. Lake water, transformed. Visible for a few days, then gone, transformed again into a snow-covered lake.
