During their spring and fall migration loons can be seen on lakes in southern Wisconsin. They are restricted to larger lakes since they need a quarter mile of open water to take off. This common loon (Gavia immer) was travelling north without a mate, stopping over for a few weeks on Crystal Lake, a glacial lake in northern Dane County. From 35mm negative.
